Apple's iOS 26, unveiled at the Worldwide Developer's Conference on June 9, introduces a significant new feature for online identity verification. Beyond the visual updates like the "Liquid Glass" design and enhancements to Apple Intelligence, a key addition is the "Verify with Wallet on the Web" capability.
Secure Online Identity Verification
This new functionality allows users to securely verify their age and identity online using state-issued licenses or digital IDs stored within the Apple Wallet. This eliminates the need to directly upload sensitive documents, such as passports, to websites when performing actions like purchasing age-restricted items or renting a vehicle.
How "Verify with Wallet on the Web" Works
The process is designed for privacy and security. When identity verification is required, iOS 26 facilitates the process by transmitting necessary information from the Wallet. Apple will inform the user about the website's data usage and whether the information will be stored.
Enhanced Privacy and Security Measures
This entire transaction is safeguarded by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that no party, including Apple, the website, or governmental entities, can access the transmitted data.
Expanding Digital ID Functionality to the Web
While in-app digital ID verification has been available, iOS 26 extends this capability to the web. This expansion is achieved through support for the W3C Digital Credentials API and the FIDO CTAP protocol, enabling "Verify with Wallet on the Web" to function across Safari on all Apple devices and in other supporting browser applications and operating systems.
The Digital ID feature within iOS 26 supports the storage of state-issued IDs, licenses, and passports. Users can authenticate sharing of their Digital Wallet information with a website by scanning a QR code on their iPhone and using Face ID. Furthermore, Apple plans to integrate support for third-party applications that utilize licenses.
Preventing Fraudulent ID Usage
To prevent fraudulent identification, the "Verify with Wallet on the Web" feature ensures that all IDs are cryptographically signed.
Availability and Initial Partners
Initial partners supporting this feature include Uber Eats, Turo, and U.S. Bank. Additionally, state motor vehicle departments such as Arizona MVD, Georgia DDS, and Maryland MVA will integrate support for their digital ID apps.
iOS 26 is anticipated for released this Fall, coinciding with the launch of Apple's new iPhone devices.
